A specific list of high-risk AI application areas defined by the EU AI Act that trigger mandatory compliance obligations.
Under the EU AI Act, Annex III identifies eight sensitive areas: Biometrics, Critical Infrastructure, Education, Employment, Essential Public/Private Services, Law Enforcement, Migration/Border Control, and Administration of Justice. Any AI system falling under these categories is automatically high-risk unless it meets specific procedural exceptions under Article 6(3).
Real world example:
A company building an AI tool to rank job applicants' CVs identifies their system as high-risk because Employment is a listed category in EU AI Act Annex III.
