The international standard specifying requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).
Published in late 2023, ISO 42001 has become the global gold standard for AI management systems certification. It provides a management skeleton (Harmonized Structure) similar to ISO 27001 and contains 38 controls in Annex A specifically for AI, including data quality, algorithmic bias monitoring, and societal impact assessments. Certification proves to stakeholders that AI governance is a managed process rather than a point-in-time audit.
Real world example:
A multinational bank achieves ISO 42001 certification to demonstrate "presumption of conformity" with high-risk management expectations. Their AIMS includes a live registry of all 50 internally built models, each with a mapped owner and documented risk treatment plan.
